Truth and Order in Ionescos Bald Soprano Essay -- Bald Soprano Essays
Truth and Order in Ionesco's Bald Soprano à à à à Any sense of order, of sense itself, is shattered and constantly questioned by Eugene Ionesco in his play "The Bald Soprano". A serious challenge is made against an absolute notion of truth. Characters throughout the play, however, continue to struggle to maintain and share a unified and orderly existence. Empiricism is espoused by several characters. They submit that life experience is all that is necessary to establish unshakable order and thus, truth. Mrs. Smith states, "Truth is never found in books, only in life" (29). While this empirical debate underscores the need for an unmediated knowledge of truth, Ionesco simultaneously undermines empiricism as a viable method of attaining it. On a basic level, order diminishes, deteriorates, and virtually disintegrates as the play proceeds. à à à à à à à à à à à à Empiricism is essentially deductive in nature; a logical premise is established from direct sensory experience. This method calls into question even the most commonplace assumptions. Nothing is accepted as given without sufficient proof. In this manner ordinary events like tying one's shoe or reading the newspaper in the subway are made to seem extraordinary. Each otherwise mundane experience contains a new vitality. Mr. Martin exclaims, "One sees things even more extraordinary every day, when one walks around" (22). The characters seem to lack a certain sense of familiarity (or boredom, perhaps) with such mundane events. Each experience, regardless of size or scope, force the characters to constantly remain in the process of reevaluating and refining the most basic assumptions upon which their lives are based. Mrs. Smith's incessant externalized inner monologue at the open... ...le isolated statements cease to be intelligible. Ionesco's language late in the play is a language of non sequitirs and nonsense. Far from articulating a unified notion of truth, language unleashes the capacity to express a cacophony of voices and viewpoints. Unequivocal statements of any sort become virtually impossible because the power to negate them is embedded in the fabric of language itself. Ironically, as the play reaches its seemingly chaotic crescendo, Ionesco himself seems to submit to some vaguely cyclical notion of order. The dialogue of the players disintegrates and then reintegrates into a single sentence, thus allowing the play to begin again with new faces, but undoubtedly the same dramatic dà ©nouement. à Works Cited Ionesco, Eugene. Alexander II and Reform
Alexander II was known as a reforming czar. Was he primarily a reformer? Alexander II executed many reforms during his time in power but did he reform for the sake of reforming? In the essay I will conclude whether or not Alexander had objectives in which reforming only partook as a secondary effect, and if so, what ââ¬Å"wasâ⬠he primarily? From a political point of view the landlords most likely opposed the peasant liberation reform in 1861 (Berghorn, 2009) which affected the Russian countryside. The landlords felt that they were being robbed of their property, the serfs. These were awarded full citizenship. (Lovett, 2003) This might have made Alexander II less willing to reform. However many of the serfs couldnââ¬â¢t leave the land they previously were bound to and so their freedom only existed legally as many remained, bound, to their landlords. (Lovett, 2003) This was as such a good solution to Alexander II as it inspired faith in some peasants that reforms were coming whilst sending a message to the landlords that their authority wasnââ¬â¢t threatened. From a military point of view Alexander had seen Russia take heavy casualties in the Crimean war and as he feared Europeââ¬â¢s more militarily advanced countries gaining influence he started in 1857 to execute the army and naval reforms. (Troyat, 1992) (Lovett, 2003) This should therefore have been a very appealing option to Alexander II as he could claim the reforms in his own name and at the same time preserve his power. From an economic point of view the Russian Empire was outdated. In order for Russia under Alexander II to play an important role as an economic power they had to industrialize. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Russia) The emancipation reform could certainly have been an attempt to as well as pleasing the serfs demanding freedom trigger a movement of urbanization and increased factory production. In that sense the emancipation reform could have served yet another cause of trying to westernize and making it seem like Alexander was a man trying to please his people. From an ideological point of view the theses of Alexander reforming secondarily is supported by the fact of some peasants and middle-class citizens adopting the socialist ideas of Karl Marx. This ideological standpoint was dangerous to Alexander II as it included an overthrow of the czarââ¬â¢s power. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Marx) Another ideological group dangerous to Alexander was the nihilists who later on came to practice terrorism which threatened his life. (Radzinskij, 2008) Contradicting the reasons to reform was the orthodox Christian church that could not agree to these reforms and had given him his power combined with his upbringing which had taught him to preserve royal power as a primary initiative. From a social point of view czar Alexander might have reformed as a reaction to his fatherââ¬â¢s harsh policies imposed on the people as this was arguably a reason the pressured situation had emerged. An example of this would be the educational reform. (Lovett, 2003) Alexander also introduced a judicial reform based in the French system which greatly simplified criminal matter and rendered the different parties involved in a judiciary process more equal. (Troyat, 1992) The latter reform should reasonably have upped Alexander standings with many groups and fulfilled the cause of making him seem like a reformer in order to soothe radical group such as the nihilists mentioned above.

Compare and Contrast of ââ¬Å" Cathedral ââ¬Å" and ââ¬Å" Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues ââ¬Å" The two stories that will be examined in this essay are two that may not appear to have a great deal in common, but once we look deeper in to the stories it becomes clear that they are similar but still have their own identities, finding strong differences and similarities is the goal of this paper. These stories are ââ¬Å" Cathedral ââ¬Å" which was written by Raymond Carver in nineteen eighty three, and ââ¬Å" Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues ââ¬Å" which was written by James Baldwin in nineteen fifty seven. At the end of ââ¬Å" Cathedral ââ¬Å" Robert and the narrator are watching a T.V program talking about cathedrals and Robert asks the narrator to describe it to him. The narrator struggles to verbally describe the building so Robert has him draw it while he places his hand on the narratorââ¬â¢s while he draws, the T.V program ends and the station is off the air but the narrator does not care, he is enjoying himself and is immersed in what he is doing with Robert â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t stop. ââ¬Å"(109). The wife even wakes up and begs to know what they are doing but neither of them care much and continue with the experience they are having together. In ââ¬Å" Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues ââ¬Å" the narrator and Sonny go to a club where Sonny will be playing with his band, the narrator is still slightly uncomfortable with Sonny but once he hears Sonny playing and sees all of Sonnyââ¬â¢s friends gathering around him and loving him, he realizes that Sonny is his own man. The trouble the narrator had with Sonny is that even though he and Sonny are both adults now he still feels the need to

The Holocaust A Mass Murder Of Millions Of Individuals
The Holocaust was a mass murder of millions of individualsââ¬â¢ primary to and during World War II. ââ¬Å"Only 54 percent of the people surveyed by the Anti- Defamation League (ADL) in a massive, global poll have ever heard of the Holocaustâ⬠(Wiener-Bronner). The Holocaust was from 1933-1945 and was run by German leader named Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a man who wanted to create his own race of people. Therefore to create this race, he wiped out anyone who did not have the specific descriptions that he wanted. For people to fit into his race, they had to have blue eyes and blond hair. This excluded the Jews and from then on Hitler slowly dehumanized them. In the concentration camp the first thing they had to pass was the selection test. The selection test was what the SS man (German soldiers) used to determine who was fit for work. Usually children, mothers, and elders were the first to die because they were not mentally fit for the work they were going to be given. People wh o passed the selection process either died by starvation, disease, fatigue, or assassination. It took twelve years before anyone intervened and by then it was too late for millions of people. Even though over twelve million people died during the Holocaust, genocides have still happened in Rwanda, Darfur and Cambodia. Rwanda is a country in East Africa, which has had a mass killing with over 800,000 of its civilians dead. The Birth Experience Essay Example For Students
The Birth Experience Essay Oh my goodness! She looks like it hurt so bad if someone does not get the nurse in here, I am going to scream for her. I can see the pain was unbearable as she breathe heavy while the contractions intensify. My sister giving birth to her first-born was amazing sight as a man watching. Lucky I am not scared of blood and plus I love my sister. I could not get to close to her to hold her hand but it was aggravating to be in that room watching my sister in pain as she give birth to my nephew. I was your average person living an average life. I was so caught up on life wondering when something amazing was going to happen to me. I was starting to think I wasnââ¬â¢t worthy of amazing things, while everyone around me was having miraculous things happen until The month of July, July 15, 2007 to be exact, I felt different when I woke up, slightly weird; I was thinking it was going be a good day. Funny thing was my sister found out she was pregnant. I had not noticed her sickness with me being at work until my step mother asked her, ââ¬Å"Maââ¬â¢am do you need any pads or tampons while Iââ¬â¢m heading out? â⬠I looked and replied, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t need hear that, text that kind of stuff. I thought she had a lot stress on her because, of all the things going on in her life. Surely, I did not want hear my sister say she was pregnant. She denied being pregnant, until a week or two had come and gone. I went on with my normal routine until one day she could not keep anything down. At that time I knew something was wrongI had a horrible feeling. A 20 yr. old healthy young woman not being able to eat or drink anything she was surely dying to tell me the truth. I overheard her making an appointment to the doctor she ask to receive the earliest appointment the doctor had. I decide to take off that of her appointment so she had to tell me what was going on with her. I went alone with her to the doctorââ¬â¢s office but the trip to the Doctorââ¬â¢s Office was like trying to swallow a pack of nails. Once we arrived, she signed in and sat down as we waited her legs were shaking so fast like a man waiting for sentence to death row. ââ¬Å"Charl, Charlzette Jordan,â⬠a distant voice called. She slowly rose to her feet it seemed she already knew the answer. The nurse advised that they would be drawing blood to determine the cause of her illness. I sat in the chair impatiently while the nurse prepared to draw her blood. The nurse placed the labels on the tubes, turned to her, and said, ââ¬Å"Ok thatââ¬â¢s it,â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s all,â⬠she replied. She said, ââ¬Å"Yes your results will be in within 1-2 weeks. â⬠As I followed the exit signs back to the lobby and out the front door I thought to myself why they donââ¬â¢t want tell what she really here for. As we proceeded to the car, the ride home was antagonizing no one said a word the whole ride home. Now, the next week and a half were torture until the phone rang. I just stood there in the kitchen after eating a double stack of pancakes, bacon, grits with butter and sugar. Oh my! The aroma of the breakfast was still in the air. Ring, ring, ring the telephone continued it was like a distant sound. I finally answered, ââ¬Å"Hello,â⬠the voice on the other end replied, ââ¬Å"Good morning is Ms. Leonard available,â⬠I answered, ââ¬Å"Good morningâ⬠, she right here than put the phone on speaker. ââ¬Å"Ms. Leonard we have your test results and it appears that youââ¬â¢re pregnant,â⬠in amazement, I held the phone and stared my sister down until she cried. .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .postImageUrl , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:hover , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:visited , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:active { border:0!important; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:active , .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55 .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u046d949714dadfdc5b17aab007f65f55:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Endangered Species EssayThe nurse asked if she was still there on the count that it was so quiet. She thanked her for the update and disconnected the line, and all I could do was sit on the couch. I was so excited I ran and notified my parents they were shocked but happy. My family was going crazy with excitement. At that time she found out she was a little over 12 weeks watching that baby grow was amazing and seeing her change was amazing. The monthly trip to the doctorââ¬â¢s office was fun as we prepared for her baby boy arrivals. A baby shower was unnecessary due to the fact that my step mom went shopping crazy once we found out the sex of the baby. Soon it was time to prepare that trip to the hospital. St. Joseph here we come April 10, 2008 I was eating burger king and she started having contractions I had no idea what that horrible face she kept making was. She was slump over in pain I helped her to the truck and we drove to the hospital. She had no idea she was about to endure all the pain of becoming a mother. I could smell the fresh smell of linen in the delivery room, the bright light, as well as all the utensils needed to welcome my nephew. I did not know what was going to happen, but I will soon feel all the joy of watching my nephew come in to the world. It would be amazing seeing this little person for the very first time. Finally, April 11, 2008 17 long, sweaty, intense, and tiresome hours she welcomed a beautiful baby boy at 5 lbs. 11 oz. I was so proud I never knew someone that small could still everyone heart in the room that moment. I cried, I was finally able to see the baby that had been growing inside of my sister for 39 weeks. The bond we instantly had I will forever cherish and remember that day. Well, I guess amazing things do happen to those who wait, the wait was well worth it and I wouldnââ¬â¢t change a thing that I went through with my sister. I was there for my nephew like he was mines and I love him so much like he is mines. His dad was nowhere to be found so I stepped up for my sister and had her back all the way through. My experience was a very special one and, now I see that when itââ¬â¢s your time for amazing things to happen it will happen. Thereââ¬â¢s no way I will ever forget April 11, 2008 at 11:08 a. m. I form a bond with my nephew that no one can break and my sister realize how much I really love her and have her back.

Poem Lifes A Beach Essays - Din Bahane, Navajo Mythology
Poem: Life's A Beach Lifes a Beach I turned off the car and took a deep breath. Looking slowly up into the pink sky, I began to watch the golden sun go to sleep. The beach seemed deserted, quiet, but peaceful. I opened my door and put my feet out on the soft sand. I started taking my shoes off, then my socks. I threw them in the passenger seat, and then shut the door. I looked out over horizon of the lake and started walking towards the still water. With each step I took, I could feel the warm sand crunch between my toes. Then suddenly, a sharp rock, but not sharp enough to break the skin. Closer and closer to the calm water, I began sinking deeper in the sand. It was comforting, the silence, tranquility, and warmth of the faint sun. There is a slight breeze, warm, but cold and lonely. I could smell the scent of fish blowing through my hair and body. The sun was still fading, slowly but surely the day was almost over. About half of it is gone now. I could see shades of blue, red, purple, and pinkish-yellow. They were mixed with puffy clouds that lined the beginning of the sky and the end of the water. I noticed the darker shades on the bottom of the lower clouds. I stopped walking and looked up at the faint stars. The seagulls were flying overhead. They were screeching and swooping at the water. I started to wish I were one of them, flying free without any restrictions or limits. I listened to their voice, the screech. Deep down in I could understand what they were saying. I cant explain it, but I was so in love with the moment I thought I saw things as they did. I was in company of animals that had no concept of time, and no worries, and I was contempt with that. I closed my eyes and the faint sun warmed my face, as if shining only for me. The warmth made me feel sad, because I had no one to share it with. It made me wonder if anyone else was doing this same exact thing as I was right then. When I opened my eyes, all the birds were gone except for one. The bird was like me. It didnt want to fly away; it wanted to stay there on that lonely beach and watch the sunset of a lifetime. No sound, just the wind blowing thunderously through my ears. And the waves crashing down on the wet sand. It made the hair on my arms stand up and I got a chill, but I didnt move. I took another deep breath and started walking towards where the water meets the sand. With each step I took, the sand got cooler and cooler. Then, with a final step, it turned cold. My feet were in the cold water and sand. It was sudden, wet, but soft. The dark blue water drew back in. Thrusting violently, crashing everywhere, the lake threw its cool brisk body into my dry legs, scaring the lone bird away with its unique destructive sound. The wind started to pick up a little. It was extra cold on the wet spots of my body. The water was as black as silence, with only a slight reflection of the sun. I could not tell the lake was there. The sun took the lake with it, to share with someone else. I stood there for a couple more seconds, and before I knew it, the sun was gone. The colors became more independent as the shadow of the sun lessened. Then, it was gone. Without trace, sound, or movement. It was strange to me: an energy source as abundant as the sun was just in my presence an energy source that heats a whole planet and a lonely beach had left without a trace. I looked up and saw a whole new world of beauty, as if the sun left the people of the night a gift until its return. The stars were bright and few. It was a little cloudy higher up. I could only
